The Textile Association (India), Rajathan Unit has come forward and extended support to the ongoing year long HIV &
AIDS Awareness Campaign being run by Denim Club India.
Mr. Dhirendra Sharma, Secretary, The Textile Association (India), Rajasthan Unit talking about this initiative said “Rajasthan is currently not
one of the high prevalence states for HIV and AIDS and hence it is necessary that we take adequate measures to curb and reduce the infection rates rather
than being complacent and allowing the situation to worsen. Our unit will extend all possible support to Denim Club India in increasing the awareness
level of workforce in various textiles units in Rajathan and for implementation of the Work-place Policy on HIV for reducing the stigma attached with HIV
and AIDS.”
As a part of this joint initiative an HIV & AIDS Awareness Session was organised for the Officers and Technical Staff of Sangam (India) Limited, Bhilwara on 1st February,
2010, to sensitize the workforce and reduce stigma and discrimination surrounding HIV & AIDS. |

The session began with an interactive discussion where the participants were invited to share their knowledge and ideas pertaining to HIV and AIDS with
the objective of enabling dialogue and reducing stigma that surround HIV and AIDS due to incorrect and incomplete information.
The interactive discussion was followed by screening of two short films produced under the AIDS JAAGO project, funded by Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, namely Migration by Mira Nair, and
POSITIVE by Farhan Akhtar.
Expressing his views after the session Mr. S. M. Gupta, President, Sangam (India) Limited “The session has served as eye-opener for our
staff. Several myths and misconceptions have been clarified due to which a change in the response and attitude on the mention of HIV and AIDS is apparent
among the staff members. The sessions today have acted as a catalyst for reducing stigma and discrimination against People Living with HIV and we will
definitely continue with this good work."
Mr. Sandeep Arora, Managing Director, Polyspin Filtration (India) Pvt. Ltd., who has been supporting the campaign expressed that "The Indian
Textile Industry is among the worlds leading textile industries, for continued growth it is imperative that we educate the workers so that they can
protect and prevent themselves from HIV infection. The HIV awareness campaign by Denim Club India has come at the right time not only for checking
spread of HIV, but also as a boon for companies in the textile sector, by preventing loss of trained and skilled workers due to HIV infection because of timely
intervention programs." |
